The history of the bullfighter's "suit of lights," or traje de luces, is rooted in Spanish bullfighting traditions and evolved from the flamboyant costumes of 18th-century Castilian dandies. Initially, the attire was a practical blend of protection and maneuverability, but as bullfighting gained popularity, it became a more elaborate and symbolic form of dress. The traje de luces is now a highly stylized and individualized garment, often featuring intricate hand embroidery with gold and silver thread, and sequins. As bullfighting gained prominence, the attire became even more elaborate, with the introduction of the montera (hat), capote (cape), and the majesty of the traje de luces itself. While bullfighting itself faces controversy, the traje de luces remains a highly celebrated symbol of Spanish culture and continues to influence world class haute couture.
